Feel the music...
We have done so many tests with conventional speakers mounted in the original
places behind the seats - none of them led to acceptable results. Besides the miserable position of the original mounting panels (in terms of acoustics), you have the problem that you will only hear the speaker on
your side. In clear - the driver’s sound stage is shifted to the left side, the passenger’s sound stage to the right side.
Therefore we had to find a completely different solution which, at first sight, is
totally surprising. We decided on so-called Exciters, which are normally used for flatpanel speakers (like NXT etc.). In our case we combined those exciters with a small diaphragm (made from
glassfiber-aramid-composite material), which is connected through a washer to the backside of the seats. That means that the seat will be “abused” as a diaphragm as well. We know that this may sound crazy, but it
works perfectly. The advantages in practise are significant:
- The exciters create a totally diffuse sound field without any left-right information, which could confuse the ear. The stereo image and the
correct sound stage are only established by the front speakers. The exciters do not affect the perfect “front staging” of the Elise Audio System in any way, but simply add a three-dimensional component to the music.
- The sound field of the “rear speakers” (exciters) is extremely homogeneous - a result which cannot be realized with any conventional speaker in the original mounting holes.
- The exciters set
the seats vibrating, so that you can really feel the bass. To achieve the same effect with conventional speakers, extreme and dangerous sound pressure levels would be necessary. Even while driving, where most of the
bass of the subwoofer is masked by road, wind and engines noise, you still can feel the music, giving you the impression of a deep and powerful bass response.
You can hardly believe that it works? Simply try and you’ll be convinced!
